How To Brew Like GARA

Bring home your own beans and brew up a cup GARA style. Our coffee beans can be brewed with any method, but here’s just how we like to do it!

Phin

Recommended With: Jumpstarter

Flavor Profile: Slightly sweet, full-bodied, light gritty mouthfeel

Grind Size: Medium-fine to fine

Water Temperature: 208°F/98°C

Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:5

Coffee Ground: 20g
Water: 100g

  1. Preheat the phin by pouring boiling water into it.
  2. Add ground into the brewing chamber and gently shake to level.
  3. Use the gravity press to gently press down coffee grounds.
  4. Pour 40% of your boiling water over the gravity press. Use circular motions for even distribution and extraction. Let bloom for 50-60 seconds.
  5. Add the remaining 60% of your water into the brewing chamber using the same circular motions.
  6. Let the water drip for about 3 and a half to 4 minutes. It should yield around 65% of your original water volume, leaving a strong, concentrated brew.
  7. Add condensed milk for a traditional Vietnamese coffee or drink it black for a strong kick!

Espresso

Recommended With: Một, Hai, Ba, Dô!

Flavor Profile: Sweet, mild acidity, full-bodied mouthfeel

Grind Size: Fine

Water Temperature: 194-199.4°F/90-93°C

Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:2 - 1:2.5

Coffee Ground: 18-20g

  1. Add ground filters into the portafilter. Prepare the espresso puck by leveling or using a WDT tool then follow with tamping.
  2. Add the portafilter into the espresso machine and pull the shot in 25-30 seconds.

Cold Brew

Recommended With: Toolbox

Flavor Profile: Mildly acidic, smooth, clean and refreshing mouthfeel

Grind Size: Coarse to medium

Water Temperature: Room Temp or Cold

Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:10

Brew Time: 12-24 hours

Coffee Ground: 1000g
Water: 10000g

  1. Grind the coffee and place the grounds into a cloth bag or cold brew filter bag.
  2. Add the bag into a brewing container and pour water over it to submerge the coffee bag. Let the coffee steep for 15-24 hours; a longer steep yields a more condensed flavor.
  3. After steeping, remove the coffee bag and strain the cold brew through a coffee filter or fine mesh strainer.
  4. Mix with fruit syrups, top with cold foam, or drink it black!
